GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – An Eastern Carolina city hosted a police and barber event to give kids a fresh start to the school year.
Hundreds of families showed up Thursday to get free haircuts at Dmtcutz Barbershop in Greenville, but the doors never closed. This is just one of the many locations participating in the 8th Annual Police and Barber Event.
From 3pm to 7pm, kids could get a free book bag and supplies as well as a great haircut before the new school year starts. There was also plenty of time to talk about barbershops between the children and the executives.
Sergeant Richie Williams said the event not only benefits the children but also the police.
“This gives the kids a chance to see us in a different light,” said Sgt. Williams said. “Being able to go out and talk to them and interact with them and find out what's going on with them in school and stuff is really important to us, but it's also about giving back and giving them It’s about getting people to see us in a different light.”
Sergeant Williams says at the end of the day, it's all about seeing the smiles on the kids' faces, knowing they're helping. She also said events like this are important for many families because they take the pressure off back-to-school.
